A NOTE FROM CHASE MCPHERSON
A little more than ten years ago, under my given name of Chase Erwin, I began work on a book series called Bloodbound. It was created in part because of my desire to be a self-published author, in part as a type of therapy. Some aspects of the story were a thinly-veiled attempt for me to reconcile the aftermath of an abusive relationship. In the intervening years I had begun a much more stable relationship, which has since solidified into a devoted marriage — but the self-image issues, the doubt, the flashbacks and memories lingered. Professional therapy, as it so often does, helped. But I still needed an outlet.I designed the main characters in the image of myself and my new partner, now husband. I put aspects of our real lives in those characters; even some things we have said to one another during our courtship and first years as a couple wound up in the three books I wrote in the initial Bloodbound series.Having them be vampires was a product of the era. Twilight and True Blood were all the rage on the screens. Throughout their history, however, vampires have been figures of intrigue, danger, and a mixture of emotions. Making them agents of an underworld spy agency was the twist I decided was missing, at least in my estimation — a heroic role.I wanted a world where vampirism, at least in the role of this agency, was not looked upon with derision or vitriol. This is also why the characters’ sexuality is barely discussed - derive your own theories of allegory and real-world connections as you will. What you’re about to read is a reboot, if you will; a reintroduction of the Bloodbound concept, with some key changes to the story. The Hunter character’s abusive boyfriend storyline has been withdrawn - it served its purpose when I wrote the first novel. I may revisit the topic if this series picks up steam.Hunter’s path towards a relationship with his partner, now renamed Kai, and to his new career as an espionage agent, will thus change in tack, one that I hope won’t be as jarring for the reader as in the original series. No longer will Hunter be the “damsel in distress” starting out. This should put our two protagonists on more of an equal footing in some respects.I also hope that with the passage of time, I have become a more thoughtful and creative writer. I still have a passion and fondness for the story I was telling, and I sincerely hope you will enjoy this new take on the ideas I had and follow me for the journey.
